Teenager Slashed in Face During Bronx Subway Attack as Concerns Over Transit Safety Grow
By Sharnellia Bennett-Smith
Bronx, NY — A 17-year-old girl was slashed across the face while riding the 4 train in the Bronx, New York City, on December 17, 2024, in a random and unprovoked attack. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. after the teenager boarded the train at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station.
According to authorities, an unidentified man approached the teenager, slashed her left cheek with a sharp object, and fled the train at the 149th Street-Grand Concourse station. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where she is expected to recover from her injuries.
This attack is part of a troubling rise in violent incidents within the NYC subway system. On the same day, a separate assault occurred in Brooklyn, where a 32-year-old man was randomly stabbed while watching Netflix on a northbound Q train near Park Place and Seventh Avenue. The assailant fled the scene, leaving the victim with stab wounds to his chest and arm that required stitches.
In response to the increase in subway violence, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of 250 additional National Guard members to New York City subway stations ahead of the holiday season. The move aims to provide an increased sense of safety for commuters during a time when the transit system typically sees higher ridership.
The NYPD continues to investigate both incidents, urging anyone with information to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. No arrests have been made in connection with either attack.
The surge in transit violence has sparked calls for improved security measures and greater vigilance. Advocates for transit safety have emphasized the need for visible law enforcement presence and faster responses to incidents to prevent future attacks.
