Men To Be Banned From Women’s Pool By The UPG
Ultimate Pool Group (UPG) Bans Men from Women’s Pool Following U.K. Supreme Court Ruling
By Ximena Rodríguez-López
United Kingdom - In a move that has sparked significant public debate, the Ultimate Pool Group (UPG) has announced that men will no longer be permitted to compete in its female category events. This decision comes in the wake of a recent UK Supreme Court ruling which clarified the legal interpretation of single-sex spaces, reinforcing the ability of organizations to limit participation based on biological sex under certain circumstances.
The Supreme Court’s ruling, issued earlier this year, upheld the principle that in specific settings—particularly competitive sports—organizers may lawfully create single-sex categories to ensure fairness and safety. Although the ruling did not specifically mention pool or cue sports, it has established a legal basis for sports organizations throughout the UK to review their inclusion policies and reduce the risk of potential legal challenges.
The Ultimate Pool Group, which runs a number of televised pool competitions, said the change is aimed at preserving the integrity and competitive balance of its female division. In a statement, the organization emphasized that it supports inclusivity and diversity but believes that, given the nature of elite competition, the female category should be reserved for women.
Advocates for women’s sports and some female athletes have applauded the decision, citing concerns over fairness and the preservation of equal opportunity in sport. The policy is expected to take effect immediately, affecting upcoming tournaments on the Ultimate Pool Group’s calendar. The organization has indicated it will continue to evaluate its policies as legal guidance and societal views evolve.
